Contacting the Government about Gaza

The failure to hold Israel to account in the past when it perpetrated similar crimes, not least the bombings of the UN compound at Qana in both 1996 and 2006 , has created a climate of impunity for Israel, to the extent that its armed forces seem to think they can escape any form of accountability. That has to end now.

The recent escalation of attacks on Gaza has been met with a heinous lack of action from the British government and indeed the rest of the international community.

We urge you therefore to write to them, by letter, email or fax as soon as possible to express your concerns and to press them to make the appropriate representations to government ministers.

Full details of how to do this, and suggested points are given below.

Key points to raise with your MP, government ministers and UN (If u can only write to one or two addresses, please do, and perhaps come back later):

• The massive and overwhelming assault by Israel on the civilian population of the Gaza Strip. Fourteen Israelis have been killed since 27th December, but in the same period 758 Palestinians have died, including 257 children.
• Call for Britain to pursue the suspension of the EU Trade Agreement with Israel on the grounds of grievous breaches of international law during the recent military offensive.
• Ask your MP to put pressure on the government to support a reinstatement of the EU wide arms embargo that was placed upon Israel between 1982 and 1994.
• Call for the full implementation of UN Security Resolution 1860 without delay.
• Call for your MP to support a full inquiry into the bombing of at least two UN schools by the Israelis and attacks on relief workers and humanitarian convoys.
• Ask your MP to write to the Foreign Secretary raising your concerns.
Things to remember:
• Always be polite and courteous
• Double check your facts
• Letters should be no longer than one side in length
• Government Ministers will not respond to direct contact, MPs will. Contact both.
Response to UN Security Council Resolution 1860 (when contacting UN):

UN Security Council Resolution 1860 is “too little, too late”. It has echoes of the Israeli war on Lebanon in the summer 2006, when the Security Council took weeks merely to call for a ceasefire, which should have been passed within days of the conflict.

The language of this resolution is too vague, and lacks the required urgency and force given the atrocious situation in the occupied Gaza Strip.
